    Desktop Computers VS Laptops

John Robinson 04/21/2015     No Comment     Computers

desktop computerAre desktop computers better than laptops? That’s the question most people face when they are shopping for a computer. A desktop computer is the one that sits on an office desk or in the bedroom.

It is a bit bulky since it comes with a separate tower which houses the processing unit, the hard disk and the DVD drive. It also comes with a separate monitor, a keyboard a mouse.

A laptop is an all-in-one portable computer that can be carried from place to place. It has a battery which can last for between 1.5-2 hours, enabling one to use it on the go.

In the past, a desktop was your only option if speed really mattered to you. Nowadays, the gap has narrowed and in some cases, both have equal performance. However, desktops retain the edge, so if you want a powerful computer for playing games or for rendering heavy graphics, you should definitely go for a desktop.desktop computer set

You also have more upgrade options with a desktop computer. It is true that most laptops will allow you to easily add more
RAM or swap the hard drive for one with bigger capacity. Nonetheless, the average desktop has multiple bays making it possible for it to take more RAM than a laptop. It is also relatively easy to swap a processor or graphics card, which in a laptop is quite difficult, nigh on impossible.

This brings us to the issue of repair. A desktop PC, as you would expect, is easy to open up, blow dust or remove a broken part. Laptop repair requires considerable skill, and in most cases you have to take it to a technician. Laptops seldom accept generic parts for replacements, unlike desktops which are not as specific.

On the other hand, laptops are portable which is a huge advantage. You can work, read, listen to music or watch movies while travelling or when relaxing at the local park. Since virtually all of them have wireless cards, you can access internet or check email anywhere there is a Wi-Fi hotspot.

This portability, however, comes with its own downsides. They can easily be stolen if you are not watchful and the smaller size makes them less comfortable. If, for example, you want a better movie or gaming experience, the desktop trumps the laptop because of a bigger screen and better sound.laptop

Generally, if you want a computer that you can use at home as well as at work or school, choose a laptop. A desktop restricts you to only one workstation. However, if it is powerful enough, it can be able to do much more for you, such as creating animations, storing a large amount of files and even act as a server if you so wish. Are desktop computers better than laptops? I hope this guide has helped you to come up with an informed answer. In most cases, the computer you choose will depend on your needs.…
